LEG HEALTH MATTERS: RAISING AWARENESS THIS WORKERS DAY

On Workers Day, Venavine ® is raising awareness of how your work can affect your leg health. Did you know that if you sit for long periods doing office work or driving long distances, you can be at risk for poor circulation in your legs? The same can be said for jobs where you stand for long periods, like hairdressers, hotel staff, pharmacists, and retail workers, to name a few. 1

Sitting for long periods can lead to swelling, varicose or spider veins because sitting causes blood to pool in your legs making it harder for your heart to pump it back up. 2,3

The University of Syndey led a study that collected data from over 80,000 adults over eight years. The study found that prolonged standing is no better for health than long periods of sitting and may increase the risk of circulatory issues. An important finding was that standing for long periods will not offset a sedentary lifestyle. 1

Practical tips to keep your circulation going

When it comes to sitting for long periods, you should move regularly throughout the day rather than replacing them with standing for long periods. Whether you sit or stand for work, set reminders to take regular breaks, walk around, go for a walking meeting, use the stairs, take regular breaks when driving for long distances, or use your lunch hour to get away from your workstation and do some movement. You should also aim to do 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise daily. Standing desks are perceived as a healthier option than long periods of sitting however you should still combine using a standing desk with light exercise throughout the day. 1,3

Wear comfortable clothing and footwear. Tight clothing can restrict blood flow, especially in your legs and feet. Opt for comfortable, breathable fabrics and well-fitting, low heeled shoes, especially if you are on your feet all day. Staying hydrated can also help to support circulation. Keep a water bottle close and sip regularly throughout the day to stay hydrated and support good circulation. 3,4

You can also elevate your legs for 15 minutes before or after work by raising them above your heart.

Venavine ® products can help improve circulation if you sit or stand all day for work. Venavine® Capsules provide relief from heavy, tired, achy and swollen legs. Venavine® Intensive Cream has an on-the-spot cooling, relaxing effect on the skin.

By practising the provided tips and using Venavine® products, you can lessen the effect of sitting or standing on your legs and improve your leg comfort at work. While you have some time off on Workers day, why not put together your leg health plan.
