The Connection between age and leg circulation health

Did you know that being older than the age of 40 puts you at risk of poor circulation in the legs? Changes in the blood vessels normally occur with age. Capillary walls thicken slightly which can cause a slightly slower rate of the exchange of nutrients. The biggest problem with poor circulation is that your cells aren’t getting as much oxygen as they need. Normal aging also causes a reduction in the body’s total water. With less fluid in the bloodstream, blood volume decreases.1,2

The aging process also affects vein walls and valves which don’t work as well as they once did. Veins lose elasticity and stiffen.4

This can cause a number of symptoms in the legs, including2,3,4

  • Muscles that hurt or feel weak when you walk
  • Numbness
  • Swelling
  • Veins that bulge
  • Varicose veins
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Heavy legs
  • Pain

When you are older you may also have other conditions that reduce your blood flow and cause poor circulation such as high blood pressure or diabetes. If you have high blood pressure your blood pushes against your blood vessel walls with a lot of force which can weaken them and make it harder for blood to move through the vessels.  If you have diabetes and too much glucose in your blood it can harm your blood vessels.1

Varicose veins can result in blood flowing the wrong way. Being overweight or obese can also slow down your blood flow.1
